Switzerland having a great fright, Sweden and Great Britain playing with the big boys
Whereas on paper the day didn’t promise to be very thrilling, it turned out to be pretty interesting and full of twists and turns. The small teams didn’t give up and showed the regular improvements of some countries.
To the end of suspens
Meeting Germany was only a formality for Switzerland and yet, it was close to turning into a nightmare. We had to wait until the overtime to see Switzerland impose themselves in utter suffering and finally reach the quarter finals. Switzerland will then play against France. The latter’s encounter with the brave but modest team Argentina was a foregone conclusion. Great Britain finally got done with Columbia: England will enter the high groups next year… And meet the Czech Republic at the next round. On the other side of the charts, the USA are exempt from eighth finals. They will play against Sweden. The Swedish team will take the place of Latvia in the upper group after their last-minute victory facing the Latvian team. Last but not least, Canada and Italy will fight against each other after having easily passed Brazil and Australia.
World Cup
At the bottom of the chart, the group crossing enabled Australia to beat Namibia two seconds before the beginning of the penalty shoot-outs. Mexico had to go through shoot-outs to defeat Venezuela. Germany made short work of India, New Zealand beat Japan 14 to 2. All those team play now for a place at the World Cup, which is the equivalent of a World Championship of second division. The cup enables to maintain some challenge in the competition.
Columbia and New Zealand follow their ways
In the women’s category, Canada and the USA haven’t played yet. New Zealand imposed themselves 5 to 2 facing Mexico, while Columbia beat Great Britain by a short head (1-2).
Argentina made short work of China (5-0) just as Namibie (2-10). The North-American pair seems unreachable.
26 games scheduled on Friday
The last day at the Honda Center will witness games from 7 to 10… AM to PM! The quarter finals of the men’s will take place in the morning, then the semi-finals in the evening. A long and decisive day for everybody before a finale at Huntington Beach.
