In 1956, Antonio Pirrello invented a prototype of motorized skates… like a jet pack! Carried like a backpack, the gas engine is connected to the right skate, the propeller, while the left skate steers the course. Propelled at speeds over 40 miles per hour (64 kph), the inventor uses a hand operated clutch connected to the backpack by a wire.
Despite good media exposure on television and in magazines, especially in “Popular Mechanics”, Pirrello’s skates were never commercialized for a general public. We still wonder why… 😉
